How To Choose The Best Slot Punch

How To Choose The Best Slot Punch

If your employees, custodial staff, management team, etc. use ID cards to access your company building or rooms within the building, some or all may choose to carry their ID badge/card on a badge reel or a lanyard. In order to do this, a hole or slot must be punched into the card. Can you use a standard punch that would be used with a sheet of paper? Maybe, but maybe not. Some cards are extremely thick and possibly even after the first attempt, you'll end up breaking the handheld hole punch.

Rather than suffer that inconvenience and possible failure, consider purchasing a slot punch for the task. They come in an impressive selection, however, so you may be confused as to which one to choose.

Here, we'll take a look at various types of slot punches in an effort to assist you in your endeavor.

The Shape of the Punch

You might choose a round punch or one that is shaped differently, depending on how the card will be carried, mounted, used, etc.

Different Types of Mechanisms

There are handheld, hand-operated, and electronically operated slot punches. If you have to punch a lot of cards at one time, you may opt for the manually operated (table/desktop) or the electronic model.

The handheld model is roughly the same as the previously mentioned hole punch used for a sheet of note paper. If you have to punch a lot of holes at one time, however, it's very hard on your hand.

The table mounted/tabletop/desk model resembles a big stapler. To help align your card it also comes with an optional guide.

Where the electronic models are concerned, they come in either heavy-duty or standard versions. Like a sewing machine, they use a foot switch. Simply press the pedal gently after the card is loaded. Included in this setup are centering guides and the capability to adjust the slot size. Choose up to 5/8 inches or a slot as small as 1/8 inch, to accommodate different attachments. If you wish, in relation to the edge of the card, you can also adjust how close or far away the hole/slot will be.
